What are the differences between 28AW and 24AWG patch cord

Mini CAT6A 28 AWG Assemblies

As information demands increase, data centers are becoming more aongested with more active data cables. 28AWG patch cords gave become widely used in data center applications. Cobtel has released a 28AWG low-smoke halogen-free CAT6 and CAT6A patch cord, which is more suitable for the high-density data center than the traditional 24AWG jumper cable, and can improve the data center wiring capacity.

The benefits of 28AWG patch cord include:

  • 28AWG patch cord provide better cable management, saving 50~60% of the cable space, the same cable pipeline can accommodate more cables, reduce project costs.

  • Slimmer conductors can achieve smaller bending radius, optimize cable management and convenient installation, and reduce the later operation and maintenance costs.

  • It's lighter and save about 25%~30% storage space, improve freight and storage efficiency, reduce the overall engineering cost.

  • Transmission performance and mechanical properties are not inferior to 24AWG patch cord.

  • The number of plugging and unplugging can reach 2500 times

  • Large headroom, excellent performance with standard TIA/EIA-568-C.2

  • Continuous 1 minute load 50N, outstanding performance with standard IEC60603-7

  • Support bandwidth up to 500MHz and up to 10Gbps data transmitting speed, PASS FLUKE CHANNEL TEST

  • 50 Micron Gold-plated 3prong contacts provides a fully contact wire conductor and ensure excellent conductivity

28AWG CAT6A patch cord can provide better cable management, saving 50~60% of the cable space, the same cable pipeline can accommodate more cables, reduce project costs.

Slimmer conductors can achieve smaller bending radius, optimize cable management and convenient installation, and reduce the later operation and maintenance costs.

Lighter weight, save about 25%~30% storage space, improve freight and storage efficiency, reduce the overall engineering cost.

2, Traditional 24AWG patch cables are difficult to meet the future high-density demand of data centers.

At present, the most popular products used in the cabinet / rack are 1U 24-port RJ45 patch panel. With the rapid development of the Internet expansion, the data also shows explosive growth, and the data center inevitably require high density, high speed and scalable products to meet the future use needs. Therefore, it has become the development goal of various manufacturers to provide a solution for 1U-terminated 48-port RJ45 patch panels. Here, jumper cable becomes the key to solving the problem.

The traditional 24AWG CAT6 patch cord has a large cable diameter and a limited bending radius, which requires a large space for cable management. In addition, it is not easy to manage the cable with a 1U RJ45 48-port patch panel.

Therefore, it is imperative to introduce Category 6 jumper cables with smaller diameters to optimize the cable management space.

It can provide better cable management, saving 50~60% of the wiring space, the same cable pipeline can accommodate more cables, reduce project costs.

3, The 28AWG CAT6A patch cord released by Cobtel can easily realize 1U termination to 48 ports.

The 28AWG CAT6A patch cord released by Cobtel has a wire diameter of about 4.0mm, which is about 1/3 thinner than the traditional 24AWG CAT6A patch cord (Cable Dia.: about 6.2mm). It can achieve a smaller bending radius, save about 50%~60% cable management space, and it is lighter, which can save storage space and improve freight and warehousing efficiency.

This new jumper cable uses the same injection molding process as Cobtel's other patch cord. People in the field know that the overmolded connector can ensure that the flexible cable and crystal head are firmly connected, so as to ensure the insertion times and load strength of patch cord.

For such a small diameter patch cord, it is quite difficult to be formed by high temperature heating. At the same time, it also needs to ensure transmission performance and mechanical performance. We will test its actual performance parameters by testing.

4, Excellent Cobtel 28AWG CAT6 Patch Cord

For network patch cord, the performance indicators can be checked by testing the NEXT headroom, insertion test and pulling test. We did these three tests on 28AWG CAT6 patch cord, and the results are as follows:

Patch Cord Cat6 1.0m

NEXT Headroom Testing

Test Instrument: Fluke DSX-8000

Test Limit: TIA Patch Cord Cat6 1.0m

Interpretation of test results: The test result headroom greater than 0 means that the sample conforms to the standard TIA/EIA-568-C.2. The larger the headroom, the better the performance. In the comparison of the Fluke test results of the randomly selected 24AWG regular jumper cable and 28AWG high-density jumper cable, it can be seen that the performance of the 28AWG high-density cable is better!

4.1 Insertion Test

According to the standard IEC60603-7-1, the number of patch cord is plugged and unplugged is ≥750 times. In this experiment, the number of plugging and unplugging is set to 2500 times, and the performance before and after the test is compared.

4.2 Pulling Test / Tensile Test

The standard IEC60603-7 stipulates that in order to ensure the stability of the link, the connection point must pass the tensile test. In this experiment, the 28AWG patch cord was inserted into the module, and the load was 50N for 1 minute, and the performance before and after the test was compared.

4.3 Summary

Through the test, it is found that although the diameter of the 28AWG high-density jumper cable becomes thinner, its performance in the NEXT headroom test, plug-in test, pull test etc. is not inferior to that of the conventional 24AWG jumper cable. This removes the concern that thinner wire diameter equals weaker performance.

24AWG jumper cable

24AWG CAT6 Patch Cord / 28AWG CAT6 Patch Cord

In practical applications, the 28AWG patch cord can easily manage 48 patch cables in a 1U cable management space. Compared with the normal 24AWG jumper cable, Cobtel 28AWG LSZH CAT6A jumper cable is indeed more suitable for high-density environment in data centers.
