The role of optical cable color code in data center

(1) Distinguish optical cable grade

The color code of the outer sheath can identify the grade of the optical cable. Om1 / om2 optical cable usually adopts orange sheath, OM3 / OM4 optical cable adopts light green sheath, single-mode optical cable adopts yellow sheath, and hybrid optical cable (indoor / outdoor optical cable and outdoor optical cable) adopts black sheath. It should be noted that the mixing of om1 and om2 or OM3 and OM4 optical cables may be troublesome.

(2) Identify fiber optic jumpers

Marking fiber optic cords with color codes can reduce the possibility of human error. For example, you can highlight mission critical jumpers in red and show technicians that red jumpers can only be moved with appropriate authorization or supervision. Similarly, it is necessary to keep the color of the optical fiber connector consistent with the optical fiber level color standard, which will make it easier for technicians to use the correct connector on the optical cable.

(3) Distinguish between different ports

Color coded port icons help identify different network routes according to internal requirements. By marking each panel port, network management can be simplified.

(4) Distinguish the connector sheath

Staff can use color codes on the boot connector to help technicians maintain the correct parallel grouping of switch ports, making daily maintenance, movement, addition and change easier. If you change the connector color, you need to ensure that the cable color represents the fiber grade to avoid confusion. The staff can also change the color of the guide connector to distinguish the different deployment of the optical network, so that the technicians can easily view the contrast in the panel.

Optical fiber color code provides an ideal and simple method to solve the problem of optical fiber wiring. Inside the optical cable, the optical fiber buffer can also be color coded with standard colors to facilitate connection and splicing.
