A modular plug is a standardized telecommunications network interface that provides interfaces for voice and data transmission. The modular plug was initially defined in the Universal Service Ordering Code (USOC) system of the Bell System in the United States and was used in the 1970s to provide computer-aided telephone equipment authorized by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

A modular plug is a type of plastic connector that can be inserted in a fixed direction and automatically prevents detachment. It is commonly referred to as an RJ-45 connector (RJ-45 is a network interface specification), and it is also known as a "crystal head." The modular plug is suitable for on-site termination between equipment or horizontal subsystems, and the housing material is made of high-density polyethylene. Each end of the twisted pair wire is connected to a network card and a hub (or switch) by installing a modular plug.

In a Category 6 modular plug, the 8 metal contacts (pins) are divided into two rows that are staggered, while in a Category 5 modular plug, the 8 contacts are arranged in a straight line. Category 6 cable has a transmission rate of 1000Mbps, while Category 5 cable has a transmission rate of 100Mbps, which depends on whether the router is 100Mbps or 1000Mbps.

Considerations for Category 6 modular plug:

It is not recommended for users to make their own modular plugs in Category 6 systems because the electrical performance stability of self-made jumpers cannot be guaranteed due to limitations in the equipment and professional level of construction personnel at the construction site. The electrical performance may also differ from that of professionally manufactured jumpers. Therefore, the following requirements should be noted to improve the success rate of manually making Category 6 modular plugs:

(1) Minimize the length of the untwisted portion of the wire that is not inserted into the modular plug. Do not untwist all the stripped wires, as it will degrade the electrical performance of the jumper.

(2) Pay attention to arranging the wiring sequence according to the standard when threading the cable, and minimize the crossing of cables.

(3) After threading the wires through the modular plug, cut off any excess cable to align with one end of the modular plug. Insert the wires all the way into the front end of the modular plug's housing to ensure reliable contact.

(4) Control the pressure applied during crimping. Excessive force can cause the spring contacts to be pressed too deeply, affecting the reliability of the contact with the socket. Insufficient force can result in unreliable contact between the spring contacts and the wires. A portion of the cable's outer sheath should be inside the modular plug's housing, with the housing securing the outer sheath to prevent movement of the cable inside the modular plug, which can affect the stability of the electrical performance.
