The patch panel is the most important component in the floor distribution system, serving as the hub for cross-connections between the vertical backbone and horizontal cabling subsystems. The patch panel is typically installed in a rack or on a wall. Category 5e patch panels specifically meet the requirements for gigabit transmission performance.

Category 5e patch panels are mainly used in gigabit networks and are now commonly used in local area networks (LANs). The price difference between Category 5e and Category 5 cables is not significant. As for Category 6 patch panels, they are generally used in ATM networks, and it is not currently recommended for use in corporate LANs. The most common patch panels in general LANs are Category 5e and Category 6, with the ability to easily provide a communication bandwidth of 155Mbps and the potential for upgrading to gigabit bandwidth, making them the choice for horizontal cabling. Patch panels can be further divided into shielded and unshielded types, with most LANs using unshielded twisted pair (UTP) as the transmission medium for cabling.

Usage:

The patch panel is a modular device used for managing the information outlets at the termination points. The front-end information cables (Category 5e or Category 6) enter the patch panel in the equipment room, where they are terminated on the panel modules. Then, jumper cables (RJ45 connectors) are used to connect the patch panel to the switch. In general, the patch panel is used for management. Without a patch panel, if the front-end information outlets are directly connected to the switch, any cable problems would require rewiring. Additionally, the management would be more chaotic and repeated plugging and unplugging could damage the switch ports. The presence of the patch panel solves these problems, allowing for better management through the replacement of jumper cables.

The usage and quantity of patch panels mainly depend on the total number of network points or the number of network points on a specific floor (and adjacent floors, depending on how the system is designed). Different buildings and system designs will require different patch panels in the main equipment room. For example, in a four-story building with the main equipment room located on the first floor, and all floors' network points entering that equipment room, the number of patch panels would be equal to the total number of network points in the building divided by the number of ports on each patch panel (e.g., 24 ports, 48 ports), plus some additional capacity. In another scenario, a nine-story building with the main equipment room on the fourth floor may have sub-equipment rooms on each floor to avoid excessive cable length, with switches in each sub-equipment room. In this case, the number of patch panels in the main equipment room would be equal to the number of network points on the four floors divided by the number of ports on each patch panel (e.g., 24 ports, 48 ports).
